3 Books to Try if You’re Getting Bored of Romantasy

The romantasy genre is oversaturated.

My author friends’ agents are hearing it over and over from publishers right now. And honestly, as much as I love both fantasy and romance, I have to agree. Bookstore shelves feel like a sea of swords-and-flowers book covers these days.

Don’t get me wrong.

Readers are never going to stop loving romance. And a lot of us are never going to want to spend our valuable moments of escapism in humdrum contemporary settings, either. But we’re looking for something fresh.

That’s where Romanta-SCI comes in. Filled with dystopian settings, action, banter, and all the tropes you love, this genre is the perfect place to turn for your next romance read. If you’re a romantasy reader looking for something different, I’ve curated a selection of potential reads just for you.

A hand holds the blue and gold book cover with abstract bird design in front of a shelf of sci-fi books.

Heavenbreaker by Sarah Wolf

This New Adult sci-fi features a fierce and feral heroine bent on revenge, and romantasy readers will love that the setting has a medieval feel.

FMC Synali enters a mech jousting tournament where she forms a dragon-rider-like bond with her mech and develops a messed up romantic entanglement with a rival jouster.

A hand holds the gold-on-white book cover of conform in front of a dark shelf of sci-fi books. The cover shows a gold stylized cityscape above the title, and another cityscape reflected below the title.

Conform by Ariel Sullivan

This one is on my want-to-reads list. It’s a futuristic dystopian romance set on Earth, only with a new high-tech society that has formed after a world war.

It sounds like it’s a love triangle between FMC Emiline, the elite ruling-class man she’s contracted to procreate with, and the rebel leader who wants to topple the system.

I haven’t read it yet so if you have, lmk your thoughts in the comments!

A hand holds the paperback book A Symphony of Starlight in front of a dark bookshelf. The book cover shows a woman with pink cyberpunk hair and a black leather jacket in front of a purple toned background of space and planets. The book title A Symphony of Starlight is visible in purple and white in the foreground.

Indie Pick: A Symphony of Starlight by Amy Zed

So many Romantasy readers have told me “I didn’t know I liked sci-fi until I read this book!”

Starlight is full of the kind of action and romance Romantasy readers crave, plus it’s set in a cyberpunk world, so it’s easy for readers new to sci-fi to dive into.

Yes, I’m the author of this one. But you don’t have to take it from me. Here’s a glimpse of what readers are saying in Amazon reviews:

“Shockingly Good”
★★★★★ Bella

“Didn’t know I liked sci-fi til this book!”
★★★★★ WT

“So addictive I flew through it in two sittings.”
★★★★ Kelsie
