Weekly Read: Coldwire by Chloe Gong

A YA cyberpunk spy novel with a slow-build mystery, romance, and intriguing use of dual timelines ending in a great payoff.

I’m surprised to say that my fave sci-fi read of 2025 is a YA novel. I don’t often review YA, but I enjoyed Gongโ€™s debut Romeo and Juliet retelling These Violent Delights, so when I heard this author had a cyberpunk novel coming out, I was interested to see how she’d tackle my fave genre. … Read more

Weekly Read: Other Worlds– A Sci-fi Anthology

Image of book cover showing a couple walking in a sci-fi landscape with jungle in the foreground and a planet on the horizon.

Other Worlds is a 2025 collaboration between indie authors Ben Logsdon, Erica Rue, R.Lynn Hanks, Calanthe Colt, Amber Toro, Ilias Siametis, Amy Marie Ayres and Alana Faye Wilson. I picked up this collection of short stories hoping to find new indie authors to love, and I was not disappointed. Each story had something interesting to … Read more

YA Sci-Fi Reviewed for Adults: The Dividing Sky by Jill Tew

Published 2024. Sub-genre, YA. Style, straightforward. Spice scale, 1: just kissing or fade to black. Triggers, fictional drug use. Version I read, audiobook, $25.50 Canadian dollars. Summary: In a futuristic Boston driven by productivity, Liv works as an emo proxy providing vicarious emotional experiences for the elite. But when rookie cop Adrian catches Liv dealing emotional scraps to the less fortunate, he pursues her into the wilderness, where he finds that Liv is not the criminal he believed her to be. My Take: Loved it! Clean enough to buddy read with a younger teen yet nuanced enough for an adult to enjoy solo.

It’s been a while since I reviewed a YA science fiction book, and I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one. While I love YA romance, it feels like so many of the recently published books in this genre are geared toward adult women rather than actual teenage readers. The plots seem to be … Read more

Science Fiction Featuring Indigenous & Canadian Persepctives

Yesterday was National Truth and Reconciliation Day here in Canada, a day where we take time to remember the horrible practice of stealing indigenous children from their families and placing them in residential schools, where many died without ever seeing their families again. Mass graves have been found at some of these sites, and the … Read more

YA Reviews for Adult Readers: Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

When I think of YA sci-fi that could just as easily have been placed on the adult shelf if marketers had simply chosen a different tactic, the first novel that comes to mind is Iron Widow. The main character may be eighteen years old, but this story of a female mech pilot determined to get … Read more

YA Reviews For Adult Readers: The Stars Between Us by Cristin Terrill

This is one of the YA novels I read when I thought I was writing YA and was looking for YA comps for Starlight. With romance, intrigue, and a touch of Bridgerton, this read is appropriate for younger teens but equally enjoyable for adults. Vika works as a barmaid on an impoverished, working-class planet that … Read more

Weekly Read: Heavenbreaker by Sara Wolf

So, it’s taken me a couple of weeks to finish this one because it’s longer than my usual reads. (Don’t get me wrong, Heavenbreaker’s no Sanderson brick, but the audiobook is fifteen hours and I generally go for twelve and under. Longer books take longer to build, and, what can I say, I’m impatient!) Heavenbreaker … Read more
