Weekly Read: Eclipse the Moon by Jessie Mihalik

You guys, I needed this book this week! Stress was bubbling over in our house with our back-to-school schedule stuffed with activities and everyone’s anxiety running high, and then Covid hit. We had to cancel all our fun weekend plans, including my birthday costume party. I was stressed and disappointed, but Eclipse the Moon by Jessie Mihalik provided the perfect escape.

This fun sci fi romantasy book allowed me to dive into a galaxy full of intrigue, action, and romance. And I even got to attend an alien fashion show–just what I needed after missing my costume party!

But the thing I enjoyed most about Eclipse the Moon was the personality of the main character, Kee Ildez. The rainbow-haired hacker wears her emotions on her sleeve, approaches life with exuberant enthusiasm, and has a tendency to hyper-focus so much that she has to set timers to remind herself to eat and sleep.

I do all these things too!

I found Kee to be one of the most relatable romance characters I’ve read, and I think there’s some hidden nearuodiversity rep in her behaviour. If you’re a little neurospicy, you might see a lot of yourself in Kee, too!

Even though Kee is smart and beautiful, she’s had a hard time with romantic relationships in the past because she dives in with all her heart and can’t always read her partner’s emotions. She’s often pushed people away by moving too fast.

Kee fell for Varro, the alien telepath who joined her crew in the last book, on first sight. But he ignored her flirting. Because of Kee’s trouble with past relationships, she’s convinced herself he only wants to be friends.

But when the two go on a top secret mission to gather information at a fashion event on Bastion Space Station, Kee is forced to face her feelings for Varro head on, and she discovers that he’s more attracted to her than she ever imagined.

Varro vows to protect Kee on her mission, but when they attend the fashion show, everything goes sideways. Instead of gathering information, the two must work together on an action-packed rescue mission that could make or break their efforts to stop Valoffs and humans from going to war.

On top of the miscommunications between Kee and Varro, there’s so much action going on that it’s no surprise their romance burns very slowly. If you’re only in it for the sexy scenes, this isn’t your book. But if you can wait to the ending for your steamy romance to come to a head, and you love intrigue, angsty kisses, and blaster battles, this one’s for you!

You all know how much I loved the first book in this series, Hunt the Stars. I was happy to find that Eclipse the Moon continues the political intrigue plot from book one. There are a lot of interesting developments that make me excited to read book three!

If you’re looking for a romantic and action packed escape this week, I highly recommend you pick up Eclipse the Moon by Jessie Mihalik. This book holds a hefty dose of everything you need!
