Weekly Read: Facets of Revolution by T. A. White

Facets of Revolution is the fourth book in T. A. White’s Firebird Chronicles series, which follows kickass military veteran Kira on her journey to uncover her alien past and prevent the outbreak of a galactic war like the one that left her friends dead and her heart permanently scarred by pain and loss.

In the first book, Kira finds out that she isn’t human. Instead, she was kidnapped from a race called the Tuann–aliens like buff, militaristic high elves who wield sci-fi technology alongside magical powers. In the Tuann’s eyes, Kira is still considered a child. She’s forced to return to their custody to train for the trial of adulthood called the Adva Ka.

We’ve been waiting for this trial to occur while Kira trains, finds romance, and goes on other fun side quests in books 1-3. In Facets of Revolution, it’s finally time for Kira to earn her place among the Tuann.

To be honest, though, the Adva Ka is kind of anticlimactic at this point, since Kira has already proven herself again and again in similar trials throughout the first few books. I was hoping that the stakes would get a little higher in this one. Especially since the ending of Book 3, Threshold of Annihilation, hinted that war had begun. I found myself missing the suspense and emotional stakes that I enjoyed so much in first three books.

Luckily, T. A. White brings it back around in the second half of Facets. I loved seeing the characters work together during the Adva Ka, loved seeing a certain father-daughter side character relationship develop, and I was completely captivated by the twists that came at the very end, during an epic courtroom trial scene that might just be one of my fave scenes in the series.

Even though it was a slow build, I definitely recommend fans of Kira read this one. This instalment has plenty to love–action, banter, and another one of T. A. White’s signature surprise endings. Plus, you’ll need to see how this one ends in order to prep for the fifth book, Trials of Conviction. It’s definitely going on my TBR.

  1. This is one of my favorite series and I’m anxiously awaiting the newest release later this year. The author really excels in her world building and I love learning more about the Tuann and Kira’s backstory in each book.

  2. My favorite series! They are to the point of being comfort reads. Agree with the above comment that the world building is excellent. I feel like each book brings us deeper into the world and this one continued that trend.

    • I agree! I like how something surprising about the backstory is revealed in each book! T. A. White really knows how to wrap up a plot and yet leave an intriguing cliffhanger at the same time, doesn’t she?
