I picked up Pirate Throne pretty much immediately after finishing Pirate Consort. I just couldn’t wait too long to find out what happens next after that shocking epilogue!
This instalment takes up just after the assassination of the king and his heirs. We start off with a new and intriguing character named Casimir, the king’s guard, who is desperately searching for the mysterious member of the royal family who escaped assassination. Casimir is assisted by Vera, an AI with unexpectedly human traits. I love what we discover about Casimir’s and Vera’s backstories, and about the missing heir, as the book progresses!
Meanwhile, Mercy and the pirates use the cover of the political chaos to travel to the quarantined planet of their ancestors in search of ancient archives that may hold key information they need to defeat the mysterious Alpha Queen.
But Mercy’s crew is not the only group that has landed amidst the ruins, and not everyone is here for research. They’ll have to fight their way both in and out of the archives, and eventually encounter Casimir himself.
I love all the intriguing world building details and bits of backstory the characters discover, both from the archives and from the various other crews they encounter on their adventure. The scope of this series just keeps broadening with every book, and the stakes rise higher and higher. It’s becoming truly epic.
I’ve seen some negative comments about this on Goodreads, with a few readers mentioning that this third instalment was “more serious” than the other books in the series, and it’s true–if you’re looking for a steamy reverse harem series where everyone f***s and lives happily every after, this isn’t your series. Telepathic Space Pirates proves more and more with each book that it’s written for fans of true space opera.
I recommend this series to anyone who likes plot-forward space opera romance. Pirate Throne definitely feels like a middle book, with plot development that will take several more instalments to fully resolve, but if you’re in it for the unique worldbuilding, kickass action scenes, and the slow burn romance, you’ll love this third book and be chomping at the bit to devour more.
And, PS, if that’s you, you’re in luck, because the long-awaited fourth book Pirate War is slated for release this April! I’m interviewing the author soon, so be sure to check back for more details!
