I’m a week behind on posting, because I actually doubled up my reads a couple weeks ago, consuming two books at once. While I was listening through Heavenbreaker by day, Wicked Games was my fluffy ebook bedtime read.
But just because this book is fluffy in comparison to Heavenbreaker doesn’t mean Wicked Games lacks a dark side of its own. With an immersive near-future tech scene and a healthy dose of witchy magic, M. J. Scott creates a landscape with just as much room for hair raising adventure as it has for sweet bestie moments and bedroom antics with the sexy billionaire boss.
Maggie may be the daughter of a wicked witch, but she has no interest in magic. Instead, she makes a living with logic, contracting her skills as a computer whisperer in the thriving tech scene that’s grown from the rubble of a post-apocalyptic San Francisco.
But when sexy billionaire game developer Damon Riley hires her to work on a top secret problem that threatens his latest VR release, Maggie’s latent magic awakens, and she discovers that demonic powers are at work. After the pain her mother’s magic caused her, Maggie is hesitant to use her newfound skills. But if she can’t learn to harness her power and fight back, her pro-gamer best friend, her city, and eventually the world will be forfeit.
This book contains the perfect balance of action, romance, and intrigue, and I especially admired how M. J. Scott doesn’t simply include magic and tech as two cool but separate elements of her world, instead weaving them together as indispensable and interconnected pieces of the overarching plot.
Wicked Games is the first novel in the continuing Techwitch series, which started in 2018 and is still going strong with Book Six on preorder now. Book One ends on a dark note, but it’s obvious there are more ups and downs to come. The series contains an ongoing romance with spice, and the author has promised the couple will eventually get their happily ever after ending.
I’m definitely planning to devour this whole series before Book Six arrives in April 2025!
