I hire a real human designer to create my book covers.
A lot of Indie covers out there are made almost exclusively with AI generated images. I get it. Professional digital painting is financially out of reach for most indie authors, since most self-published books don’t make enough to earn back the cost of professional cover art, leaving the indie author in the hole financially.
Personally, I want to put in extra effort to hire humans wherever it’s reasonable to do so. That’s why even though I can’t hire an illustrator at this time, I do hire a real human designer.
My designer takes elements of stock photos and combines them to make his own new works of art for my covers, kind of like a high-tech version of a collage. Check out his instagram post here to see how he does it!
These days, a lot of stock imagery is created at least partially with AI, so it’s possible my covers may include bits and pieces of AI-generated images, however, I work with my artist to find good quality human made stock images wherever reasonably possible. The cover designs as a whole are never generated by AI.
